On September 30th, a 1.5-hour online policy event took place via Zoom, focusing on the socio-economic consequences of research misconduct. The event centered around the newly released policy brief titled “Addressing the Socio-Economic Consequences of Research Misconduct,” providing an examination of how unethical practices in research affect not just academia but society at large. The event was chaired by project lead Rosemarie de la Cruz Bernabe, who set the stage for a comprehensive discussion on how research misconduct can undermine trust in scientific institutions and the economy, while also harming social welfare. Dr. Daniel Pizzolato presented the main points about the Policy Brief.

The event featured also presentations from three key work packages of BEYOND, each contributing unique insights from different angles of the research misconduct issue. Dr. Ian Slesinger of WP1 discussed recent literature and case studies highlighting various aspects that contribute to research misconduct (RM). WP2, represented by Associate Professor Signe Mežinska, shared findings from the recently completed Public Consultation, exploring the effectiveness of existing Research Ethics and Research Integrity policies. Finally, Prof. Tonje Lossius Husum and Dr. Alina Coman discussed WP5's identification of gaps in current Research Ethics and Research Integrity guidelines.

The event concluded with a Q&A session, giving attendees an opportunity to discuss with the presenters. The session sparked high engagement, leading to record-breaking traffic on BEYOND’s website. This spike in attention highlights the growing awareness of BEYOND as well as research misconduct's broader implications and the need for robust policy interventions to mitigate its socio-economic effects.

We hope to see You in our events again!
